From: Bat lung epithelial cells show greater host species-specific innate resistance than MDCK cells to human and avian influenza viruses

Influenza virus infected bat cells appeared more viable than correspondingly infected MDCK cells. Cells were infected at 0.5 MOI with human USSR virus or avian H2N3 virus for 24 h and subsequently analysed by flow cytometry for cell membrane integrity. Avian H2N3 virus elicited higher level of cell death than corresponding USSR virus for each cell type. In addition, with the exception of USSR virus infected E. helvum cells, each virus caused significantly higher cell death in MDCK than bat cells. Inset shows the same results presented as comparisons of cell death between virus types. Results shown are representative of three experimental repeats
