Neonatal lungs had normal lung function and an absence of inflammatory cell influx. Adult and neonatal C57BL/6 mice were infected as described in Figure 1. a) Lung sections of adult and neonatal mice at untreated day 0 and post-infection days 3, 7, and 10 were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (magnification 200X). b) Oxygen saturation, as a measure of lung function, was analyzed using a mouse pulse oximeter. Black squares denote adults inoculated with SeV (n = 6), white circles are UV-SeV inoculated neonates (n = 3), and black circles are SeV inoculated neonates (n = 6).
