Transcription factors controlling induction of the iNOS gene. Activated STAT1 induces transcription of the IRF-1 and iNOS genes, an effect which is competed by activated STAT6. IRF-1 interacts physically with NF-κB, binds to the distal κB-binding site of the iNOS promoter region, and stimulates transcription. Only when NF-κB is absent, IRF-2 can bind to the ISRE site and block transcription.
