Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from all patients using two swabs (A). Gargle samples were collected from patients whom the physician judged fit to perform gargling (B). A highly sensitive automated antigen test was performed using silver amplification immunochromatography for influenza (FUJI DRI-CHEM IMMUNO AG Cartridge FluAB; Fujifilm, Kanagawa, Japan) at clinics and hospitals. Nasopharyngeal swabs and gargle samples for TRC and RT-PCR were stored at − 20℃ until further analysis.
