Exosome biogenesis. Late endosomes sequester cargo molecules in intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) generating multivesicular bodies (MVBs). MVBs fuse with lysosomes for degradation or fuse with the plasma membrane releasing exosomes to the extracellular milieu. The intersection between cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein complexes and endosomes might be a step prior the export of RNA molecules via exosomes
