Poliovirus infection inhibits the ability of cells to respond to dsRNA. a. Schematic outlining the experimental design. At zero hours cells were either mock infected or infected with poliovirus at an MOI of 100 and 1.5 h later either treated or not with poly(I:C). After another 1.5 h (3 hpi) or 2.5 h (4 hpi) RNA was extracted for analysis by qRT-PCR. b. IFN-β mRNA levels in poliovirus-infected HEC-1B cells treated as described above. Total RNA was isolated and analyzed by qRT-PCR for IFN-β mRNA and normalized to levels of β-actin mRNA. The fold induction of IFN-β mRNA relative to uninfected controls is shown. Error bars indicate the standard error of the results from triplicate wells. hpi: hours post infection
