Capacity of S proteins with mutations in the aromatic domain to mediate cell cell fusion or pore formation. Cell cell fusion of 293T cells expressing ACE-2 and SARS CoV S, or S mutants. Cells were stained as described in the material and methods section. Red stain shows ACE-2 and green shows SARS CoV S protein. Cells expressing Swt or SΔC27 clearly formed syncitia, whereas the mutants SΔARO/ΔC27 and SW123→A/ΔC27 did not.
