Long vertical lines above the centre line represent positions not homologous to either MSV-Kom or MSV-Set sequence (i.e. mutated sites). Mutations are numbered, and refer to those listed in Additional file 1. The positions of ORFs and the virion-strand replication origin stem-loop sequence are indicated in shaded red (MSV-Kom) or green (MSV-Set). The diagrams are to scale.
